
The rain finally subsided enough for all of us to bring the children back onto the porch. The newly found freedom from the indoors must have done something to the children’s spirits because suddenly there was chaos surrounding me. In the corner, a child screamed and winced in pain as a nurse attempted to comb through his coarse hair. Two children fought loudly over one of the few toys found in a room full of children. The older, mentally handicapped kids were running around getting into trouble because of a lack of anything else to do, and a lack of anyone who could really understand them. There were fifteen children unattended and without toys to play with, not

including the four that lay bed-ridden and forgotten in their cribs. I lay there on the mat as young Ava, fully equipped with her soccer ball, climbed all over me energetically pressing on my
full bladder. “Jesus loves
you, this I know…” I began singing quietly, as she rested the ball on the floor and her head on my chest. “For the bible tells me so…” She looked deeply into my eyes. “Little ones to him belong, they are weak but He is strong…” Her gaze shifted from my eyes as she watched my lips form every word of the song. “Yes, Jesus loves
you, yes, Jesus loves
you…”

My voice trailed off as I noticed how captivated she was by the melody. It was as if, at that age—the tender age of two—she completely understood the message behind the melody. As she lay there quietly studying my face, perhaps reflecting, I looked around at the room I had
just known as chaotic. In the corner, where there once was a child screaming in pain, a nurse sat alone. With his hair freshly done, and his cheeks stained with tears, he was laughing hysterically at a silly face that Jen was making. The two children, instead of fighting over a toy, were instead taking turns getting thrown on the mat by Sam. Each of the teammates had at least two children under their care, and each child’s face, whether or not it was smiling,

was beaming. I turned my head to the right, and saw Samantha playing with one of the older mentally challenged girls in her lap—the same girl that was deemed ‘difficult’ by the staff because of the ignorance of her condition. I soon learned that Tyler and Stefene were in the toddler’s dormitory showing love and care to those precious bed-ridden youngsters.
For the past two weeks, our team has struggled with fleeting thoughts of insignificance. Why are we here? What are we really doing? Now, in retrospect, I see it; we see it. This is what we’re here for. We’re here to do the best thing we can for these kids—show them the love of Christ.

Many of these tiny bodies have gone through so much in their short lives; many of these wounded souls have never seen or felt true love through their inexperienced eyes, or have only received limited doses from the paid staff of the orphanage or from their unprepared parents. Today was our last day at an orphanage. Next week we’re ministering at different schools, and we may or may not have the time to visit Blossom Gardens one last time. It’s really hard to leave each orphanage knowing that we may never see the fruits of our labor. But, I think the Lord is finally showing us that while some of us (including me) may have come to Jamaica with our own version of this ‘mission to the orphans’, God had His plan. He had (and has) a plan that is far more reaching and longer lasting than any of us could have imagined—a plan with everlasting results.

Later on this evening, we went out again for street ministry. We encountered some we had previously met, and we met some new ones. En route we got some ice cream at a gelato place, we were entertained by a country-singing Rastafarian man, and we moseyed our way down a private beach, singing songs into the midnight sky. We returned to our ‘home away
from home’, Fairhaven, for worship and team reflection time, and ended the night with the reading of last night’s blog and the wonderful comments all you supporters leave daily. I hope you’re all doing well; it’s hard to believe that we’re going to see you all in just about a week! ♥

It’s pretty much become the “team camera”—many of the pictures you see on the blog and the hundreds of others you will see come from that great generosity you showed before we left . Angel, you should really start getting in shape now so that when we start training together you’ll be ahead of me (cuz I’m not really running that much.) Oh, and I can’t wait to kiss your soft, chubby cheeks.

i just read the blog...what another beautiful day! seeing how i was a little late on posting for the last blog...(be sure to check my comment for that! especially you Tyler, or i think that was tyler who wrote that one)...i have nothing to say really except that i think what you guys are doing is absolutely amazing. the love you show these kids is something they will remember for the rest of their lives. i am so impressed by all of your individual strength and drive to give your all each day. your stories help me put things into perspective everyday...they make all of the pressures from school and life in general seem a lot less important and they remind me that life is so precious and short. i hope you all have a beautiful sleep and you wake up refreshed for another day! A touching story; Sometimes when kids are indoors for a period of time and then go outside, they have to release alot of energy from being cooped up. If there had been storms, there was probably electricity in the air and it winds them up.
Then as you began singing, Jesus loves me, it calmes them down. Your singing reflected the Spirit of God and they knew that there was peace and love in those words. And it felt good to them.
I know how sad it is to see them hurting, sad or feel like no one cares, but know that God has them in His Care at all times. They are there for a purpose to carry out His plan. And you are there for a purpose to carry out God's plan. No matter what you do with them, your presence will have a life changing impact on their lives forever.
They know, even the most severe handicapped child, they know. God has instilled in each one of us who He is. Some accept it and some don't.
Psalm41 How blessed is he who considers the helpless; The Lord will deliver him in a day of trouble. The Lord will protect him and keep him alive, And he shall be called blessed upon the earth; And do not give him over to the desire of his enemies. The Lord will sustain him upon his sickbed; In his illnes, You restore him to health.
The Bible often speaks of God's care for the weak, poor and needy, and of his blessing on those who share this concern. God wants our generosity to reflect His own free giving. As He has blessed us, we should bless others.
This is exactly what you guys are all doing, You are all such faithful servants. You are teaching me so many things through all of your experiences. I am proud of all of you. I am still praying for strength, Health, safety, wisdom and how to minister to those kids. You may think they don't understand, they do in their hearts. And that is the BEST.. You may not see the fruits of your labors now, just know It Is Well Done.... my faithful one.

I'm glad the trip is going well! I've been praying for you everyday, but I am so thankful that I ran into your mom so I could get a quick update on how you are doing!
Jamaica sounds simply AMAZING--beautiful sites, cool water to swim in, refreshing rain, yummy food, wonderful people and children all around, fun bus drivers, encouraging teammates and leaders, and so much more! I'm glad that you are all having fun and learning a lot, always attributing it all to God. I'm so excited for all of you and you still have a whole week left! Grace, I always pray for your safety in all you do, wisdom in dealing with the people/children whom you meet, humility to put their needs before your own, and of course, love in EVERYTHING you think, say, and do. I know that you are being a wonderful example and witness of God's love to those who are around you, so keep it up! I can't wait to see you and hear all your stories first-hand! God is good. Grace, I know we talked about this before school got out, but how many times are we reminded of His goodness in our lives? Miracles brought you guys to Jamaica and miracles are keeping you safe and healthy. Even though its probably going to suck not to see all the fruits of your labor, moments like today are glimpses of that work! Those are not mistakes...those are divine. wow. you guys seriously amaze me. I don't personally know many of you but hearing your stories, I am just so wowed by what you all are doing and the heart you have for Jamaica and its people. not only are you showing SO much love to all those adorable (!) kids and teens, but i'm sure you are all being so ttansformed in the process, and THAT is awesome. I know Grace mentioned the feelings of insignificance but i hope those feelings have faded...in the here and now, you are making a tremendous impact on the people around you, and in the long run, you are becoming the type of people that James talks about, the kind with a religion that God accepts as "pure and faultless" as James put it. What's exciting to me about your trip is that not only are you guys learning more about the heart of God and what HE cares about, but I think you are inspiring many of us towards that as well. You are impacting your friends and family here as well as the people you are directly 'ministering' to. Keep up the amazing work!! :)
Tyler, i totally ordered a vanilla frappucinno, caramel affogato style and the barista said, "wow, now THAT is a partner drink." and i told her that actually, it WAS a partner drink, created by my good friend :) and it was one of those warm fuzzy moments. (not to her of course, she probably didn't really care, but I DID!) i know it is trivial to talk about starbucks when you guys are out impacting lives, but it made me miss you! keep up the good work too bud! and ps, check out the new "j-may" EP when you get back! acoustic!!
